Ask Ausiello: Spoilers
November 11, 2014

Question: Do you have any information on what chaos we can expect from the Braverman clan in the few remaining episodes of Parenthood‘s final season? — Nic
Ausiello: Much like this season began with a health scare that united all of the Bravermans, the series’ final episodes will once again bring the family together over a larger issue. “Instead of being so segregated with each storyline, there’s one storyline that pulls us all in,” notes Monica Potter. “That’s the crux of the rest of the season. It’s going to be really sad, but it’s going to be really good.”

Question: I’m in need of some Parenthood scoop! I’ll take anything at this point, though my preference is Joel and Julia. — Gabrielle
Ausiello: Despite Joel’s proclamation of love at the end of last week’s hour, he and Julia aren’t out of the woods quite yet. “Julia is still kind of dizzy from his profession,” Sam Jaeger says of the couple’s dynamic in upcoming episodes. “He really put himself out there, and we’ll see Julia struggling to figure out where she stands.”

Question: Any more info on the death story line on Parenthood this season? I can’t help but wonder if Zeek’s heart condition is a red herring and something worse is on it’s way. —Suzanne
Ausiello: I’m actually hoping Zeek’s health issues are a misdirect. Call me callous, but his death would feel too obvious (and therefore a bit of a cheat) at this point. But I have no concrete evidence pointing to such a bait-and-switch.

Question: Anxiously awaiting the return of Parenthood. Got anything new for us? — Andrea
Ausiello: Series creator Jason Katims tells us he’d like to bring back as many P’hood alums as possible for the show’s final 13-episode run, but squeezing them in will prove challenging. “Because we are coming to an ending, the stories are leaning toward the bigger issues in the lives of our characters,” he explains. “There are only 13 episodes, so there’s not a lot of room to say, ‘Oh, let’s bring this person back.’ It really has to fit into the bigger plan.” So far, both Matt Lauria and Sarah Ramos — both of whom are set to return for at least one installment — fit that bill. And so may Jason Ritter’s Mark. “If that happened, it would be later in the season,” he says of a possible Ritter reprisal. “I would love to find a way to have him come back.”

I really hope that Hank and Sarah can make it work on Parenthood! Can you tease what's coming up? — Rachel
It sounds like their rekindled relationship will be progressing quite nicely when the show returns. In other words, don't expect yet another season of Sarah wrestling with her decisions. "I don't want to tell that story again," executive producer Jason Katims says. "We wanted to jump forward a little bit with them and move them into a place where they're more solid as a couple and begin to tell new stories about that relationship. We haven't really been able to tell blended family stories and that's something I'm interested in delving into."

Question: Can you give us a teaser for the sixth and final season of Parenthood? —Ben

Ausiello: Remember that pregnancy test Amber grabbed in the Season 5 finale? Well, showrunner Jason Katims remains tight-lipped about the results, but he can confirm that Matt Lauria’s Ryan will return in Episode 3. Do with that information what you will!

Returning Fall Shows: Where We Left Off
August 7, 2014

Where We Left Off: Julia and Joel slowly started the path towards reconciliation, just as Hank made his feelings for Sarah known (and she reciprocated with a kiss!). Camille and Zeek sold their house, and Adam and Kristina got approval for their new school. And Amber may or may not be pregnant with Ryan's baby?!

What's Next: Sarah and Hank will be in a committed relationship (it's about time, lady!) and romance will also rock the world of Max, who gets his first big crush. But the main story of the final season is one that will "impact the entire cast" and will tell the story of the "changing of the guard" within the Braverman family hierarchy, according to showrunner Jason Katims. "[The four adult siblings] are getting to be middle-aged and they're getting to that point where the tables are sort of starting to turn a little bit," Katims adds. "That's kind of the story that we're telling."

Inside the Finale Plans for ‘Parenthood’
August 5, 2014

A gentler family drama plays out in Jason Katims’ “Parenthood,” the story of three generations of the contemporary middle-class Braverman brood on NBC. The main storyline of the shortened 13-episode season will launch in the premiere and focus on aging patriarch Zeek (Craig T. Nelson). All the characters will get storylines, but Zeek’s arc will affect everyone.

“It’s a season about passing the baton from generation to generation, and the family continuing,” Katims says. “You’re dealing with people moving on and maybe losing people. In the last couple episodes, several big life events will occur. When some of the best things are happening in life, some of the hardest things are happening, too.”

“I feel like we owe the audience an ending where there’s catharsis, and a few unexpected things,” says Katims, who wants to create a series finale mood similar to the one he evoked for the final episode of “Friday Night Lights.” “It was about new beginnings.”

To set up striking send-offs, these showrunners are turning to classic storytelling tools. “Parenthood” will get its own time jump; it comes midseason and takes the action forward a few months.

Aside from the possible death of a family member, two major couples are going to have to deal with exes coming back into their lives. If “Parenthood” fans were hoping that Joel and Julia would get back together in Season 6, they are going to be pretty disappointed. I still can't believe it's the final season of Parenthood! What can you tease for Season 6? — Hayley
The final season will include at least one more love story, but you might be surprised who it involves. "One story I'm really looking forward to is telling the story of Max's first real crush, which I think will have a lot of fun and humor in it," executive producer Jason Katims says. "I always love to find something new to play for that character." Here's hoping Hank has at least some helpful dating wisdom to share!
