Ask Ausiello: Spoilers
April 2, 2014

Question: Please tell me there is some hope for Julia and Joel on Parenthood. - Jan
Ausiello: Something goes down between the estranged couple in the April 17 season finale that “will give people, if not hope, at least something to hope for or to talk about it,” previews exec producer Jason Katims, who concedes that “there’s been a lot of change for a lot of our characters [this season], and a lot of those changes come to a head in this last episode. It really does have a feeling of, ‘So much has led to this moment,’ and there are some nice questions about where things are going to lead, as well. [There's a nice] catharsis at the end.”

Question: I would really appreciate any news you have about Parenthood. - Nina
Ausiello: As we previously scooped, Sarah Ramos is back as Haddie in the aforementioned finale. And, according to Katims, the storyline surrounding her return “sets up the potential for her to come back next year. … We wanted to wait until we found a story for her so that it didn’t feel like she was coming back to hug everybody. I really love the story and it will be a bit of a surprise.”

Question: Parenthood continues to impress me this season. Can you give us a teaser for the Season 5 finale? - Ben
Ausiello: As TVLine was first to report, Matt Lauria is back as Ryan in this season’s final two episodes and, per exec producer Jason Katims, when he sees Amber again “it’s over very, very dramatic circumstances and incorporates some of our other characters in a rich story. It’s a very complicated situation for Amber because, clearly, this is somebody that she has such incredibly strong feelings for and that doesn’t just go away. But on the other hand, there are lots of complications for them. We’ll see her grappling with the closeness that she feels with Ryan and the feeling that it’s important that they make a break from each other.”

Question: Very much looking forward to Jason Ritter’s Parenthood return this Thursday. Anything else you can tease? - Nick
Ausiello: Per Katims, his one-episode comeback “gets launched when Amber happens to run into him in the street, and it leads to Sarah seeing him again after a year has passed in both of their lives. It’s a moving story — and it’s just moving for me to literally see [Ritter and Lauren Graham] together on screen again. What I liked about the story is that the scenes between them play out in this very realistic way. They have such incredible chemistry together. … It also sets up for Sarah where she’s going the rest of the season.”

Parenthood Exclusive: Look Who's Returning!
February 20, 2014

A Parenthood fave is making her way back to the NBC drama after a lengthy absence. TVLine has learned exclusively that Sarah Ramos is set to reprise her role as Adam and Kristina’s eldest daughter Haddie later this season.

Ramos was taken off contract at Parenthood at the end of the show’s third season as her character transitioned to college, although Haddie recurred throughout Season 4 to lend support to her cancer-stricken mom. Her one-episode comeback in the Season 5 finale will mark her first appearance in a year.

Back in September, P’hood boss Jason Katims left the door open for a Ramos return. “It’s always a question of finding the right story combined with Sarah’s availability,” he told TVLine. “We sort of dealt with this a lot starting on Friday Night Lights, where so many of our characters wound up graduating from high school and sort of leaving the show, and sometimes coming back for either one or a series of episodes, or sometimes a lot of episodes.”

Question: Please tell me Kristina isn’t going to open up an Asperger’s school on Parenthood. I’m willing to cut my favorite show a lot of slack — I was one of the few who didn’t hate the mayor storyline! — but this is beyond preposterous. —Jim

Yep, Joel’s estranged wife kicks some legal ass to get the necessary approvals to make it happen — and she may get some ass as her reward. To be more specific, Julia hits it off with the school’s potential headmaster, a handsome educator by the name of Evan.

Question: Is there any chance Julia and Joel’s marriage can be saved on Parenthood? This story is breaking my heart like a shattered Snapple bottle! —Adina
Ausiello: It’s Parenthood – of course there’s a chance! Personally, as much as I’d like to see the show tackle divorce, it would be silly to see their marriage end over that one tiny indiscretion. Part of me thinks Julia should dump Joel based on his overreaction to this whole thing. It was one damn kiss — and she barely reciprocated. And she told him about it (albeit way after the fact). Speaking of Parenthood couples in dire straights, Crosby and Jasmine’s Adventures in Domesticity continues this Thursday when the “guy who took E.T. away” delivers some bad news to them on their doorstep.

COMING UP NEXT | Buckle up, Joel and Julia, because you're boarding a romantic roller coaster. (Look for Lost's Sonya Walger and The Office's David Denman to complicate the marital woes.) Elsewhere, Amber and Ryan begin to contemplate their own union, and the newly single Sarah -- who's now managing an apartment building -- comes into this season working on herself ("as opposed to her relationship with Hank or anybody else," the EP explains) for a change. Finally, an in-remission Kristina will strive to "realize some of her dreams that might have been put on the back burner" -- aka a bid for public office.

TVLINE BONUS SPOILER | Believe it or not, what brings Ray Romano's polarizing Hank back into the picture isn't "him being in a relationship with Sarah or trying to be in a relationship with Sarah," Katims reveals. "That's something we'll explore, but it's not how we launch the story."

Sonya Walger, Penny from LOST, set to join Parenthood
July 11, 2013

Parenthood casting has been a hot-topic for the day, shortly after it was discovered that Matt Lauria is in talks to join the fifth season, Sonya Walger is now joining as well. This leads Julia (Erika Christensen) to feel inadequate as a stay-at-home mom and doesn’t like the idea of Joel spending so much time with the sexy, single-upstart.

Fans of LOST know Walger as the beloved Penelope “Penny” Widmore from ABC’s hit series Lost. Since then she has been on ABC’s FlashForward, HBO’s In Treatment and USA’s Common Law. All of the Drama starts next fall when the series kicks off season 5, Thursdays at 10 p.m (new time).

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers
July 2, 2013

Question: Do you have anything on Season 5 of Parenthood? - Austin
Ausiello: A third party is going to create some tension in Julia and Joel’s marriage, and - shocker! - it’s not one of their irrepressible demon spawn! (I josh, I josh. I love those fire-breathing monsters… like a cold sore.) When the action picks up (after a somewhat sizeable time jump), Joel is in the midst of working on a two-year project with a fireball of an architect named Meredith (new recurring character alert!). Everything’s copasetic until Mer joins Joel and Julia for dinner and inadvertently makes former legal eagle Julia feel crappy about being a stay-at-home mom. What’s more, Julia starts to view her hubby’s new work wife as a threat. (I think we all know where this is going… ) In other Parenthood news, Sarah is going to pull an Amanda Woodward and become the manager of an apartment building, and Matt Lauria’s back as Ryan - at least in the Sept. 26 premiere - when Amber visits him at an Army base.

Parenthood: Ray Romano Books Season 5 Encore
June 20, 2013

As Parenthood executive producer David Hudgins indicated to TVLine earlier this month, Ray Romano will reprise his role as Hank during Season 5 of the NBC drama. Per our sister site Deadline, the three-time Emmy winner will appear in 12 to 15 episodes — aka a similar stint as last year, the difference being that Parenthood this coming season earned a full 22-episode order.

What last we tuned into the family drama, Hank had invited Lauren Graham’s Sarah to move with him to Minnesota, getting a definite-ish possi-maybe answer in return. Sarah had just broken things off with the other man in her life, Mark, played by Jason Ritter (who stars in the midseason Fox comedy Us & Them).

EP Hudgins, meanwhile, assured us that Sarah’s storyline for Season 5 will not focus, as it has in the past, on her roller coaster love life. “There is a very conscious effort on our part to set Sarah on a path that will really let her shine,” he said. “And in conjunction with that, she may still have some love interests.”

'Parenthood' Season 5 Spoilers: Hank's Future Up in the Air, Sarah's Love Life Won't Be Central Focus
June 17, 2013

Ever since NBC's "Parenthood" has been confirmed for a fifth season, fans have been eagerly trying to piece together the shows future. With Jason Ritter currently working on Fox's comedy pilot "Friends & Family" and Matt Lauria possibly joining the "Parenthood" cast, fans are still curious as to what's in store for Ray Roman's character, Hank.

"We're currently discussing it," executive producer David Hudgins told TVLine at the ATX Television Festival. "I love Ray Romano and thought he was so good on the show last year... He's great in that part and he works hard. He doesn't just show up and do his [scenes]; he actually researched the character."

Ray Romano Could Return For 'Parenthood' Season 5, EP Says
June 16, 2013

Hank and Sarah shippers, you may be getting what you want after all.

TVLine asked "Parenthood" executive producer David Hudgins if Ray Romano could return for Season 5 as Hank Rizzoli, a love interest for Lauren Graham's betrothed character Sarah Braverman. Hank, who also happened to be her boss, got in between Sarah and her fiance Mark Cyr (Jason Ritter), who eventually called off the wedding. But in the Season 4 finale, Hank moved away to Minnesota be closer to his daughter, leaving the romantically-challenged Sarah alone again.

But it looks like Hank's move may not be permanent ...

Parenthood EP David Hudgins on Hank's Status and a New Path for Sarah that Will 'Let Her Shine'
June 15, 2013

With Jason Ritter off romancing Alexis Bledel on Fox’s Us & Them and Matt Lauria thisclose to closing a deal to return to Parenthood, one of the last remaining questions surrounding the NBC drama’s Season 5 is: What’s the status of Ray Romano‘s polarizing (kinda) homewrecker Hank?

“We’re currently discussing it,” executive producer David Hudgins shared with TVLine at the recent ATX Television Festival. “I love Ray Romano and thought he was so good on the show last year…. He’s great in that part and he works hard. He doesn’t just show up and do his [scenes]; he actually researched the character.”
