12 Best TV Shows of 2012
December 19, 2012

All television is supposed to evoke emotion, but great television will force those emotions out of you and no other series has inspired as much uncontrollable sobbing or infectious laughter as NBC's refined family drama.

From Kristina's brave and beautiful breast cancer arc to the constantly evolving growth Amber has displayed, it's been a privilege to be an extended member of The Braverman Family. Which is, incidentally, comprised of the most talented actors on television.

The Best TV Shows of 2012
December 2012

Parenthood truly hit its stride in Season 4, thanks to Monica Potter's pitch-perfect performance in Kristina’s struggle with breast cancer, Julia and Joel’s fumbled introduction of their adopted son Victor and Amber’s crushing first love with a former soldier. Added to the show's embarrassment of acting riches, Ray Romano, the unlikeliest of romantic heroes, has made himself at home as Sarah's boss/love interest. If the Bravermans are looking to adopt any more, sign us up.

December 11, 2012

It's been a difficult year for Peter Krause, who plays Adam on NBC's "Parenthood" (Tuesdays at 10 p.m. EST). The actor has had to fight cancer both on screen with the series' most emotional Season 4 storyline, Adam's wife Kristina (Monica Potter) battling cancer, and off screen with his father and mother's simultaneous battle with the disease.

Ausiello's 20 Questions
December 7, 2012

Was Parenthood‘s Max-free episode in response to this column’s grumble from last week? Also, who else groaned, “Nooooo!” as soon as tipsy Sarah turned the hotel hall corner and bumped into Mark? (Are Sarah’s relationship decisions starting to become as troubling as Lorelai’s?)

Time Magazine's top 10 TV series of 2012
December 4, 2012

This extended-family drama, from creator Jason Katims of Friday Night Lights, has always been good. But its third and fourth seasons have elevated it to one of TV’s best because of how it has hit a memorable theme from FNL: the idea of how community can be, inseparably, both a burden and and indispensable support. Here the community is not a football team but the Braverman clan of Berkeley, Calif., which has been challenged by adoption, autism and, this fall, cancer, without seeming like it’s ratcheting up the stakes unrealistically for emotion. In the Bravermans’ world, to paraphrase The Simpsons, family is the cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems. And by raising its game to show the genuine drama in real-life challenges, it has become a show well worth adopting. (NBC)

Jason Ritter: Will he survive this week's 'Parenthood'?
December 3, 2012

Ladies love Jason Ritter. The 32-year-old actor, the son of the late John Ritter, has been a series regular on Joan of Arcadia, The Event and is now in his fourth season as Mark Syr on NBC's Parenthood.

Tomorrow night, his character's future is in jeopardy as his fiancé Sarah (Lauren Graham) continues to juggle relationships with Mark and her photographer boss Hank (Ray Romano). I chatted with the Emmy-nominated Ritter about the show, and tried my best to get him to spill a few secrets.

'Parenthood' season 4: Could NBC extend episode order?
November 21, 2012

Speaking in a conference call to TVLine, NBC's programming head Robert Greenblatt claims that the decision to keep the "Parenthood" order the same is not an issue of quality, but instead it is instead based around the schedule that has already been put in place for the rest of the year:

“That ship has sailed for this season, because we have planned the rest of the year very carefully ... But I’m thrilled to see Parenthood get an uplift this year [oftentimes winning its time slot in the demo]…. Jason Katims is one of the best showrunners in drama, and he has keyed into a storyline this season — primarily, [Kristina's] cancer — that has moved the show forward in a great way. We couldn’t be happier about that.”

[INTERVIEW] Joy Bryant Talks New Film 'Hit and Run'
August, 2012

EBONY: New season of Parenthood starts next month. What can you tell us?
JB: I don’t know what’s gonna come up! I’m not even joking. It’s crazy. I’m shooting another episode this week and I don’t even have the script yet. Like, we don’t know.

EBONY: So they keep you guys a little bit in the dark like they’re keeping fans in the dark. Is that what’s happening?
JB: Oh yeah. I don’t even know. I’m like, ‘we getting married?!’ Cause even last year I was like, ‘we getting married?! I need to know we’re getting married.’ Then they were like: ‘you need to pick out your wedding dress.’ I’m like, ‘For what?’

EBONY: What’s so great about that show, is it really feels like it reflects what our real lives are like in 2012 and beyond …
JB: The Parenthood fans are awesome. They are really in it. They are so in it. I mean, to the point where people just straight-up call me Jasmine. They grab me, give me a hug, ‘Jasmine! Think about Jabar! What? Think about Jabar! He needs his father!’

EBONY: How has being on that successful of a show changed you?
JB: It’s great to get consistent work and it’s great to work on material that you love and to work with people who you respect and who respect you. And to show up for work every day really happy to be there, like truly. Every time I’m on set I get to play, and I’m also learning, I’m learning a lot about acting and myself and all these things, so I feel like it’s really helping me to be more confident and to grow as an actor. I’m not calling myself some master thespian or something like that, but it’s really helped me because I’m just, I’m flexing that muscle all the time and I’m working with people who are freakin’ top notch, man.

More cast memebers to direct episodes in Season 4
July 3, 2012

In season 3 Peter Krause directed the 15th episode Politics. Last week Dax Shepard Tweeted that he will also be directing an episode and now it looks like Sam Jeager will be sitting in the directors chair for an episode of Parenthood this season.

Whether it’s his newly found experience as a father or as a feature film director, he’s getting a chance to direct an episode of Parenthood. “Basically, getting that job just involves a lot of begging. If I hadn’t done Take Me Home, I don’t know if I’d have this opportunity. [Parenthood is] obviously close to my heart, and even if I weren’t on the show, I’d feel pretty invested in it. I really love the dynamic of the show. It’s one of the very few shows I’ve been involved in, in my 12 years of acting that I can say I’m proudest of contributing to, in some small way. And I just respect [Parenthood show runner] Jason Katims so much that it’s going to be a lot of fun. I’m sure I’ll catch a lot of flak from the cast and crew, and I’m looking forward to that too.”

Mae Whitman and Landon Pigg talk Parenthood, Arrested Development and Austin
June 3, 2012

At just 24, actress Mae Whitman has quite the acting resume. Having played the daughter of George Clooney (One Fine Day), Sandra Bullock (Hope Floats) and even the President of the United States (Independence Day), Whitman proved at an early age she could act alongside the best of the best. Throughout her career she’s been on the big screen, the small screen and even in cartoons, voicing Katara in Avatar: The Last Airbender as well as Tinker Bell in the Disney Fairies franchise.

Arguably, her most notable roles have come from the critically acclaimed and cult favorite, Arrested Development, where she portrayed “bland” Ann Veal, and the severely underrated Parenthood, where she plays Amber Holt.

Ask Ausiello:
March 27, 2012

Question: If Jason Ritter’s NBC pilot, County, gets picked up, what does it mean for Mark and Sarah on Parenthood? I have a bad feeling someone’s heart is going to get broken. —Marina
Ausiello: Not necessarily. Ritter (who was also at the aforementioned Genesis Awards on Saturday) assured us that he’ll “have to do a balancing act between shows.” It helps, as he pointed out, that both P’hood and County are “ensemble shows” that also happen to be owned by NBC Universal and produced by Jason Katims. “They would make it work,” he maintained. “It’s not going to be that Sarah gets a phone call about some fiery crash or something like that.”

Parenthood | Many of you — in the wake of that roller coaster finale and given the fact that Jason Ritter booked a lead in Jason Katims’ medical drama pilot for NBC — are fearing the worst for Sarah and Mark, this despite the question he most romantically popped. But if the aforementioned County series does get picked up, at least the Parenthood pairing won’t end on a grisly term. “The good thing is that because they’re both Jason Katims and NBC/Universal Shows, it wouldn’t be a case of [Sarah] gets a phone call saying I was in a fiery car crash,” Ritter tells TVLine with a chuckle. “I’d be able to do some episodes to wrap it up naturally.”

Ask Matt:
February 21, 2012

Question: Will Parenthood be renewed? How can excellent shows like that be on the bubble? How can people watch The Bachelor enough for it to keep coming back? - Richard

Matt Roush: I'd be surprised if Parenthood doesn't return, for several reasons: NBC is struggling on all fronts, and while this family drama - an endangered species in its own right - is far from a hit, and is ending its run early next Tuesday, it's not an embarrassment. And NBCUniversal owns the show, so is likely to be more tolerant toward one of its few dramatic properties that generates critical buzz and audience goodwill. That said, it's not a sure bet, because very little on this network is. I wish NBC could find a time period earlier in the night to test its appeal outside of the treacherous 10/9c hour (when many people are busy with DVR playback). But none of this has anything to do with the inexplicable appeal of shows like The Bachelor. Train-wreck TV will always exert a fascination for a segment of the audience, and I just they were as eager to embrace shows that aimed a little higher once in a while.

The Sentimental Smarts of “Parenthood”
January 2, 2012

There’s a popular theory that the mark of a great TV show is that it dares you to reject it. The most ambitious dramas repel their audiences (“The Sopranos”) or confuse them (“The Wire”) or give them nightmares about bodies dissolving in acid (“Breaking Bad”). The most admirable comedies, such as “30 Rock,” crackle with cynicism. On certain nights, one might imagine that “Seinfeld” had stamped its motto all over the TV schedule: no hugging, no learning.
